The role
We are looking for an experienced Country Manager, Malaysia to further grow and deepen our Malaysia business. This is a high‑impact, visible role ideal for commercial and strategy leaders who enjoy driving growth, strengthening market position, and leading cross‑functional teams.
Reporting to our Head of SEA Expansion, you will own the Malaysia P&L and overall country strategy – spanning go‑to‑market, regulatory and licensing, partnerships, and team build‑out. You will work closely with regional and global leadership to turn Malaysia into one of Airwallex’s flagship markets in Southeast Asia.
What you’ll be doing
Shape and execute the Malaysia country strategy
Develop and deliver the overall Malaysia country strategy, including team structure, product focus, go‑to‑market approach, operational model and local partnerships.
Conduct deep market analysis to identify priority customer segments, use cases and verticals for Airwallex’s product suite (Business Account, Payments, Cards, embedded finance, APIs, etc.).
Lead growth initiatives such as new segment penetration, product expansion and optimization of existing channels and partnerships.
Partner with internal Legal, Risk and Compliance teams to support ongoing regulatory and licensing needs as the business scales in Malaysia.
Ensure Airwallex’s products and operations meet local regulatory requirements while preserving speed and customer experience.
Drive commercial growth and client acquisition
Own delivery of commercial targets for Malaysia, including revenue, GP, TPV and new customer acquisition.
Build and deepen partnerships with local financial institutions and fintechs (e.g. regional banks, payment players, platforms) to expand distribution and co‑create differentiated solutions.
Support and coach local sales and partnerships teams to originate, negotiate and close enterprise and SME deals, including complex multi‑stakeholder opportunities.
Build a strong industry network across banks, fintechs, regulators and ecosystem partners to generate insight, identify emerging opportunities and position Airwallex as a leading player in Malaysia.
Be the bridge between Malaysia and regional / global leadership
Work closely with regional and global leadership to align on strategy, priorities and investments for Malaysia.
Represent Malaysia in regional planning, ensuring local customer needs and regulatory considerations are reflected in product and GTM roadmaps.
Track and report country performance, pipeline and key initiatives on a regular basis, highlighting risks, opportunities and recommended actions.
Collaborate with global functional teams (Product, Engineering, Operations, Marketing, Finance, LRC) to localise products and processes for Malaysia.
Build, lead and scale the local team
Build and scale a high‑performing local team across sales, partnerships and supporting functions – including recruitment, onboarding, coaching and performance management.
Shape a strong team culture anchored in high ownership, data‑driven decision making and a bias to action.
Create clear goals, operating rhythms and ways of working to enable the team to execute at pace in a fast‑moving environment.
Coach and develop future leaders within the Malaysia team, ensuring strong succession and bench strength for key roles.
Skills and experience you’ll bring
8+ years of relevant experience in management consulting, investment banking, corporate strategy, venture capital or banking, with significant exposure to payments, fintech, financial services or banking, and to management / strategy / business development work.
5+ years of experience working in Malaysia, with a strong understanding of the local financial services and/or fintech ecosystem (e.g. banks, PSPs, card schemes, regulators, digital banks, platforms).
Proven leadership experience with direct reports and/or P&L responsibility, and a track record of leading complex, multi‑stakeholder projects or teams.
Experience in enterprise‑grade business development and sales, including delivering against sales KPIs/OKRs, is a strong plus.
Prior experience as a country manager or in driving growth strategy for a geography or business line is a strong advantage.
Fluent in both Malay and English, with excellent communication, presentation and stakeholder management skills.
Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with a history of data‑driven decision making and problem solving.
Ability to thrive in ambiguous, fast‑paced, high‑growth environments, balancing strategic thinking with hands‑on execution.
Entrepreneurial mindset with high levels of ownership, resilience and adaptability, and a passion for building and scaling new businesses.
Who you are
This role is ideal for someone who:
Enjoys combining strategy, execution and team leadership, and wants the mandate to sharpen the strategy, scale the team and accelerate growth in one of the region’s highest‑potential markets.
Is excited by the opportunity to build a business in a new market, working closely with senior stakeholders across Southeast Asia and globally.
Operates as a builder and owner, not just an operator – comfortable rolling up their sleeves while setting the vision for the next phase of growth.
