Job Description
About the Group/Team
We’re the Product Insights Enablement group — or PIE for short — and we’re on a mission to unlock smarter, faster product development at Canva. PIE owns "Pilot," our internal platform that brings together our in-house experimentation tooling, feature flags, metrics, and, most recently, a feature catalogue: a canonical view of every feature in Canva, with out-of-the-box business and quality metrics for product teams.
We’ve built a strong foundation of data and measurement over the years, but we’re at a point now where we’re not just here to deliver more data — we're here to unleash the next era of Canva’s product evolution. We’re building novel capabilities that combine qualitative and quantitative insights, lean into the power of AI, and empower teams to make more confident, impactful product decisions. We’re a fast-growing group of FE/BE engineers, PMs, designers and data scientists/analytics engineers. And we’re excited to open up this role to help accelerate us towards this vision, and to co-create it.
About the Role/Specialty
As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer, you’ll bring deep technical expertise to design and scale AI/machine learning systems that power product insights and decision-making. You’ll work across teams to develop intelligent models, experimentation frameworks, and data-driven capabilities that unlock new opportunities for Canva’s product ecosystem. This role is both hands-on and strategic — you’ll solve complex problems, influence technical direction, and collaborate with cross-functional partners to drive impact at scale. Your work will directly shape how Canva leverages data and AI to help teams cut through the noise and suggest the most impactful next steps.
What you’ll do (responsibilities)
You’ll design, build, and deploy scalable machine learning models and AI systems that power product insights for Pilot, our internal platform. This includes surfacing relevant insights and make recommendations to users of Pilot based on available data to identify the most impactful next step.
You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and solve complex product and data challenges
You’ll lead technical initiatives that improve our existing product such as A/B testing, and broader decision-making and insights capabilities.
You’ll mentor engineers and data scientists to elevate technical standards across the team and scale AI usage in our product to automate non deterministic capabilities
You’ll proactively identify opportunities to leverage AI/ML to unlock new product value
You’ll balance technical excellence with business impact, ensuring solutions are scalable and practical
You’ll contribute to the evolution of Canva’s ML infrastructure and tooling
What we're looking for
We’re looking for a highly experienced machine learning engineer who thrives in solving complex, ambiguous problems and is motivated by driving real-world impact. You bring deep expertise in building and deploying AI/ML systems at scale, combined with strong engineering fundamentals. You’re comfortable working cross-functionally, influencing stakeholders, and shaping technical direction. You care deeply about data quality, experimentation, and delivering measurable outcomes.
Most importantly, Pilot is an expanding internal application that supports approximately 5,000 employees. We're looking for someone enthusiastic about empowering teams with valuable insights and making a meaningful contribution to Canva’s mission.
