Accountant
Accounting & Finance · Full-time
Melbourne, VIC, Australia
Location: Melbourne · Employment type: Full-time · Department: Finance · Remote status: Hybrid (3 days per week in office)
About the role:
Everlab's finance function runs on an AI-first stack we're building ourselves - Xero, Airwallex, Notion and Claude, wired together so work gets solved rather than repeated forever. We're looking for the second person on that team.
You'd own the engine room: the transactional accounting across Australian, New Zealand and UK entities. Accounts payable, accounts receivable, daily reconciliation, month-end journals, and the compliance obligations sitting on top. It's a lot of supplier bills and transactions to manage, and the volume keeps growing. It's hands-on.
Here’s what makes it different - we’re hiring you to solve the work. Automate what can be automated, document the work, and be the person who notices what the automation missed. The people who do well in this seat take real satisfaction in a quiet ledger and a clear inbox, and would rather build the rule than do the task a second time. When done right it runs like clockwork.
You'll report to our Financial Controller, in a team of two.
Responsibilities and scope:
Yours from day one - like clockwork
Accounts payable - across three inboxes: Australia, New Zealand and UK. Processing the bills, and answering the questions. You'll be the source of truth in Slack for "is this paid yet?"
Daily reconciliation - Xero reconciled daily, AP inbox cleared daily.
Airwallex - coding decisions, receipt itemisation, card automation rules. We want you to become our power user.
Accounts receivable - raising accurate invoices and chasing what's overdue.
Month-end journals - landing on schedule.
Keeping the rails straight - supplier and customer onboarding forms, customer surveys, vendor portals, and consistent configuration across every platform we run.
Yours to solve, from the start
Watching the systems - finding what's broken, fixing it, writing the fix down.
Documenting processes
Migrating bill processing from Dext into Airwallex
Building out our Coding Guide
Yours in time
Building out our Compliance Calendar - every obligation, every jurisdiction, evidenced
Inter-company recharges across entities
Preparing indirect tax returns in-house - BAS/GST/VAT etc
Ground work for our external audit
What we are looking for:
5+ years hands-on across the full ledger - as an accountant, assistant accountant, or in a senior role where you owned AP, AR, month-end or similar. You know a ledger well enough to spot a wrong code at a glance.
Accuracy as a habit. You check your own work and find your own mistakes. Your foundational accounting is deep enough that you know why a transaction codes the way it does - and that getting it right up front beats any amount of tidying up later.
Xero fluency, plus comfort with Airwallex and similar tools. You learn the software and configure the settings to ensure we’re using things right.
Genuine AI curiosity. You've actually built something in AI, however small, and can tell us honestly where it fell short.
Systems thinking + tech savvy. You see the same problem twice and reach for a rule, and you pick up new tools quickly.
Discretion. You'll see sensitive information. Judgment about what stays confidential is non-negotiable.
Organised note taker. You naturally take notes and write things down. Staying organised is important to you.
A service instinct. A good chunk of this role is answering questions from internal and external customers. Fast, kind, accurate answers matter here.
Incredible teammate: You communicate with kindness and enjoy the growth that comes from giving and receiving direct and honest feedback. You acknowledge your mistakes, know when to "disagree and commit" and care more about the team being successful than you being right. You also recognise when to ask questions and help with the wider team.
Titles vary across the industry - if you've worked as an Assistant Accountant, Tax Analyst or similar, this could be your role.
Nice to haves:
Multi-entity or multi-currency experience - we operate across Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
Tax compliance background - GST, BAS, VAT, etc. This could suit someone coming from a tax analyst seat.
Exposure to an external audit process.
Startup, healthcare or investor-backed experience.
