Senior/Staff Data Scientist (Grid Modelling)
GRIDSIGHT
About Gridsight
Electricity grids are undergoing the most significant transformation in a century. The shift to renewables, the proliferation of rooftop solar, batteries, and EVs, and the increasing complexity of distribution networks are forcing utilities to operate their grids in fundamentally new ways.
Gridsight builds the data engine that makes this possible. We're already embedded with most of Australia's major distribution networks and have contracts with some of the largest investor-owned utilities in the United States. We're well-funded, growing quickly, and positioned at the centre of a global shift toward dynamic grid management.
The Role
We're hiring a Senior or Staff-level Data Scientist to develop the core network modelling capabilities that power our grid analytics platform.
You'll build physics-based and AI-driven models that help utilities understand how their networks behave under real-world conditions — and what happens as load patterns shift and distributed energy resources proliferate. This work underpins everything from constraint identification to DER impact analysis.
This is a hands-on technical role. You'll design and implement models, validate them against messy real-world data, and work closely with power systems engineers and software engineers to get them into production.
What You'll Do
- Design and implement generalised powerflow models that work reliably across diverse network topologies, voltage levels, and data quality scenarios
- Develop and evaluate advanced modelling techniques — linearised approximations, physics-informed neural networks, graph neural networks, hybrid approaches, and optimal powerflow
- Collaborate with experienced power engineers to ensure models are grounded in grid physics and operational reality
- Work with talented software engineers to productionise models and integrate them into the platform
- Contribute to technical strategy and help establish best practices for model development, validation, and maintenance
What You'll Bring
- Strong data science foundations: statistical modelling, experimental design, model validation, feature engineering, ML techniques
- Deep understanding of electrical distribution networks, power systems, and grid physics — whether from utilities, VPPs, grid tech, or the broader energy sector
- 5+ years in data science or ML roles, with demonstrated impact at a senior or staff level
- Python proficiency and the ability to write quality code for analysis and modelling
What Would Set You Apart
- Hands-on experience with AC/DC optimal powerflow, physics-informed ML, or similar grid modelling techniques
- Optimisation expertise (constrained optimisation, OPF)
- Software engineering depth — system design, testing, deployment, MLOps
- GIS and network topology experience
- Familiarity with Australian or US grid standards and operational practices
- Utility systems experience (SCADA, DMS, etc.)
What We Offer
- $160k–$220k depending on experience, plus equity
- Remote-first, with head office in Sydney
- A talented team of engineers, data scientists, and power systems specialists working on hard problems that matter
