Funny name, serious business

We make eco-friendly products and donate 50% of our profits to provide clean water and help build toilets for the billions of people who lack proper access. So far, we’ve contributed over $11.22 million AUD (roughly $7.5 million USD) to fund sanitation projects around the globe. Basically, we’re really good at doing good.

With hubs in Australia, the Philippines, China, the US, UK and Europe, our amazing team of 200+ work to make the biggest possible impact for people and the planet. Over the next couple of years, we’re hoping to increase our annual donation tenfold to get us closer to our dream of everyone in the world having access to clean water and sanitation services.

A bit about the role

Our Digital Product team have been reimagining what it’s like to buy and subscribe to our amazing products, optimising and improving our site for our beloved customer along the way. So far, this transformation has had the team working on big projects like going headless and driving down tech debt, to delivering and delighting our customers and setting the scene for exciting new Acquisition, Retention, and Platform projects.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, as Engineering Manager, AU you’ll be one of our go-to people on all things Retention. You will be leading a squad of engineers (both permanent and agency) as well as collaborating closely with product designers and product managers. You’ll share your expertise in retention and ecommerce, write and peer review high-quality, scalable code and seek out moments for mentorship and cross-functional leadership. Your work will be instrumental in converting our newest customers into loyal customers and contribute to an exciting foundation for retention in the company.

You’ll be working in a team based in Australia so we are open to candidates anywhere in this hub, but you’ll also be collaborating across time zones with the wider Digital Product team that are based between the US and Australia.

If you worked here this past month here’s what you would have achieved:

  • Brainstormed with our Engineering Managers and Principal of Engineering and provided your strategic input towards our technology roadmap.
  • Danced your way through weekly sprint ceremonies and kept a strong pulse on priorities, projects, productivity and throughput.
  • Worked with the Retention Product Manager and strategized on how best we can turn our new customers into our loyal customers.
  • Worked alongside your engineering team to help lead the charge of making our subscription offering too good to resist!
  • Shared a heartwarming, values and gif-filled Slack message celebrating your Engineering team in our company-wide #kudos channel celebrating all their big wins and soaked up all the warm fuzzies.
  • Contributed on our journey to reach our A11y compliance to ensure that all our websites are accessible to all (woohoo!). You’ve also been collaborating across Digital Product to get an accessibility guide out company-wide that’s inspiring us all.

Let’s talk about you

You love supporting and leading others

You are both the technical and people leader of your engineering squad. You care deeply about the people you work with (whether they are permanent or agency engineers), and it shows in the way you influence others. Titles aside, you’re known to lead by example and promote an environment of experimentation and a thirst for learning. You’re continually levelling yourself and your team up by harnessing excellent habits, keeping communication and inspiration flowing, going after goals big and small, supporting each other, holding each other accountable, and celebrating the wins together.

You’re a retention enthusiast

You have a strong understanding of eCommerce and you love finding ways to improve metrics such as customer retention rates and customer lifetime value. You enjoy working as part of a high-performing cross-functional team that leans on your technical expertise when it comes to making tactical and strategic decisions that align to their business objectives.

You’re across the code

While you have strong hands-on engineering leadership, you don’t hesitate to roll up your sleeves to deliver maintainable, testable and secure code that is easily understood by other developers. You’ll have strong ReactJS and web fundamentals experience (think modern HTML, CSS and JS), having worked with APIs and modern testing approaches (like Unit/E2E tests). But you’re also on the lookout for new innovative ways to do things. You’re sharing your recommendations for frameworks, code structure, and refactoring, as measured by our ability to continually find opportunities for optimization of performance and front end functionality. You have worked with at least one eCommerce platform (ideally Shopify but let’s still talk if it’s Magento, BigCommerce or CommerceTools).

You always put the customer first

You keep the end-user at the heart of all that your team does. You have an incredible intuition for anticipating customer issues and you’re always looking for ways to reduce friction for internal and external users. But you don’t settle for “good”, you continuously drive effective testing strategies and monitor service performance, identifying areas for improvement and ensuring stability.

You can’t stop collaborating

Your work touches every part of the business - both within and beyond! - and you are highly collaborative across all teams, hubs, and levels of Who Gives A Crap. You encourage open communication and advocate for shared positive outcomes. People trust you and you’re able to build a reputation as a leader and expert.

You give a crap

Do you want your work to make the world a better place? Do you want to work with other people who feel the same way? What a coincidence — us too!

Why should you work with us?

First off, as a certified B Corp™, we work to make a difference every day while maintaining the highest standards of social and environmental impact. With our most recent score of 125.5 we’re in very good company with other exceptional B Corps around the world.

We also believe that helping to make the world a better place should be rewarded accordingly – that’s why we offer competitive, market informed salaries, meaningful support towards healthcare for our team around the world, generous paid leave, tailored learning and development opportunities, and free toilet paper (yes, you read that right).

Our engagement surveys (thanks Culture Amp!) tell us that our team is really proud (98%) to work for Who Gives A Crap and, well, we couldn’t be more proud of that.

Have you made it this far?

If you’re still reading, we think there’s a strong chance you might be our kind of person. Here’s the thing, though — research suggests that 60% of women and underrepresented folks might have already talked themselves out of applying. Even if you don’t check every box above, we want to encourage you to introduce yourself. We believe a diversity of perspectives and experiences makes a team stronger — and the stronger our team, the closer we are to delivering toilets and clean water for all.
